For over twenty years after the end of the Civil War there was a rash of newspaper stories across Appalachia reporting the appearance of mysterious women who were found to be living in the forests of the area, apparently uncivilized and unable to communicate with those who came in contact with them.
Today we tell the story of this phenomenon, widely reported as the “wild women living in the woods,” an urban legend and part of the folklore of this place we call home.
